The Single Life

Roberto and I were already lovers, but I knew that I would never marry him. I was always honest about that and he was willing to accept the limitations of our relationship. Roberto was born in the states, but his parents were from Bogota, Columbia. While I knew I should be dating other people, our relationship was hard to relinquish. Roberto was a great lover. With him, I experienced what passionate love making felt like. We were so sexually compatible in every way. Someone once told me that couples who danced well together, had great sex together. With Roberto, that was true. People would look at us dancing and a few times applaud when the music stopped. I asked him how he learned to please a woman sexually so well. He told me about an older woman who took him under her wing when he was only thirteen or fourteen years old. Through her he learned the art of lovemaking. Roberto fit the definition of a Casanova. He did love me, but I also knew he could never be faithful to one woman. My relationship with him lasted many more years than my marriage did. However, when I tried to venture out and date other men, Roberto would go crazy. He followed me, called me when the gentleman caller was in my apartment, and knew everything about the man I was seeing. While I was teaching one day, I was called to the office for an important phone call. I thought for sure someone in my family had a tragic accident or passed away. It was Roberto, claiming that the man I was seeing had a record: a friend of his in the police department checked him out. Roberto felt I was putting myself in danger and he wondered how I could think about seeing anyone else but him. I was furious at his intrusion into my life and his possessiveness, but I was now also suspicious of the person I was seeing.

One of my teacher associates introduced me to a friend of hers. We started dating and I thought he was a more sensible person for me to date, but I also continued to see Roberto. I was not ready for an exclusive relationship and I was totally honest with both Roberto and Josh. They were willing to accept the situation, so I managed to keep up with dating both. In time, I realized I couldn’t continue this lifestyle. I knew I needed some help and recognized that my lack of male companionship during my childhood and formative years was part of my problem. The therapist recommended to me was a wonderful woman named Laura. I started seeing her once every two weeks. She worked with me on the payments and put me on a sliding scale which made it doable for me.
